Powerful features to enhance your productivity

XLThermo includes features for computing thermodynamic and transport properties of various pure fluids that are in common use in the process industries. Other features are being planned, such as properties of mixtures, sizing and rating of equipment, and pipe flow calculations. Read on to find out more.

Properties of pure fluids

Out of the box, XLThermo computes thermodynamic and transport properties for a wide range of pure fluids, including water and steam, refrigerants, hydrocarbons, and other industrially important fluids.

Custom spreadsheet functions

XLThermo provides custom spreadsheet functions for calculating fluid properties directly within Microsoft© Excel. This feature allows you to develop sophisticated simulation models without leaving your familiar Excel environment.

  • Flash Calculations: Calculate properties by specifying two state variables, such as pressure and volume (PV) or temperature and vapor fraction (TX). A full list of specifications is available in the documentation.
  • Seamless Integration: These functions are fully integrated into Excel, allowing you to use the Insert Function dialog for a quick overview of functionality and required inputs.

Quick calculation tools

For quick, standalone calculations, XLThermo offers a user-friendly graphical interface accessible from the Ribbon menu. This tool allows you to perform the same calculations as the spreadsheet functions with the convenience of a GUI. Results can be easily copied to a spreadsheet or the clipboard for use in other applications.

Properties of mixtures Planned

While pure fluid properties are essential, handling mixtures—especially at high pressures or in liquid/vapor phases—requires more advanced calculations. We are developing functions for flash calculations using common cubic equations of state, such as Peng-Robinson and Soave-Redlich-Kwong, with additional equations of state planned for future updates.

Pipe flow Planned

Accurate pipe flow calculations are critical for the process industries, especially given the complexity of piping systems with various fittings and components. XLThermo will soon include functionality for pipe flow calculations, enabling precise pressure drop assessments and system sizing. Stay tuned for updates.

Equipment sizing Planned

Sizing and rating process equipment—like heat exchangers, pumps, and pressure vessels—are common tasks in the process industries. Future releases of XLThermo will gradually introduce features for equipment sizing, expanding your capabilities further.
